Christian Freedom and the Sin of Silence

March 3, 2021 by wagraham 12 Comments

Tolerance is not enough anymore. Now, we must affirm someone else’s position and identity or be guilty of transgressing a social law code. “You cannot be silent and be affirming,” writes AnyYelsi Veleasco-Sanchez—she even associates silence with “cowardice.” In the past, such statements generally came from the politically left.

Surprisingly, however, Christians have begun to make similar arguments. They criticize others for their lack of perceived support of their opinion. One pastor even wrote on the sin of silence. Even in Christian circles now, silence is no longer tolerable—only public and vocal acts of support are.

In both cases, the form of argument is similar. Silence is betrayal.[1] Only a vocal and public affirmation of someone’s opinion and cause can prove that we are allies. The result is schism. The “pure” group cuts itself off from the rest.

Review of Ending Overcriminalization and Mass Incarceration by Anthony B. Bradley

The United States has an overcriminalization problem. On this much, Americans agree. In 2014 one in 163 Americans served time in prisons (23). When we account for all supervised persons as well (parole and probation), then the numbers become even more acute: “one in thirty-five Americans” serve within the USA correctional system (23).

Is Great Commission Christianity Opposed to Cosmic Redemption Christianity?

March 13, 2019 by wagraham 3 Comments

Anthony Bradley recently lamented the influence of what he calls Great Commission Christianity (GCC)  because it only represents a partial understanding of the Gospel (he calls it “accidentally deficient”). What GCC misses, argues Bradley, is a right focus on the Gospel’s effect of restoring the creation. Pointedly, for Bradley, this means that GCC Christians do not prioritize social issues and so social justice.

His alternative, Cosmic Redemption Christianity (CRC), affirms what GCC does but also includes cosmic restoration. Put simply, it includes evangelism and the drive “to liberate creation from the power of the devil until Christ returns.”

Is he right? Is GCC an accidentally deficient version of Christianity? As is often the case, things are not so simple. Here’s a short review of the two sides which will hopefully clarify the current debate.
