How to Afford a Family as a Millennial or Old Gen-Zer

One reason why millennials delay marriage and family has to do with cost.

A home is no longer 4x income but, say, 12x. And saving for a down payment takes much longer. Rent too has gone up so that a 2-3 bedroom townhome or equivalent could be $4000 + all sorts of fees. It makes it FEEL unaffordable since the cost of living has risen fast since the 90s.

However, I also think that millennials as a rule can afford children, but they’d have re-shape their whole lives. If they are DINKY, one partner would probably need to work part time. Funded Childcare Promises Freedom but it will Bind us to Industry

Canada wants both spouses to work in order to increase GDP since our economy requires continual growth. This also creates a third job because one spouse leaves the home and hires a nanny / day care to watch the kids.

At one point, the spouse who left the home (usually the wife) will realize: I am leaving the home to work outside the home because caring for my children is not adequate work; while at the same I am employing someone to watch my kids.

This realization should lead to the following conclusion: our society exploits the idea of freedom to work away from home in order to grow GDP and deny the biological urge to care for our children. At the same time, it creates jobs of non-parent caretakers of kids, lauding the goodness of this career.

If caring for other people’s kids is good, why not ours?

Catechize Your Kids

If you don’t catechize your children, may I suggest that you start?

Many young adults who leave the faith do so because they feel it’s merely about assertion or about emotional appeals. But Christianity is based on truth, whether historical or rational. Jesus rose from the dead, and Christianity makes sense.

Marriage and Family Existed before All Time

Christians often maintain that marriage and family constitute foundations for society. From a biblical point of view, the argument goes like this. God created humanity. He instituted marriage through Adam and Eve. And through marriage, God founds the institution of the family that make up the backbone of society.

While true, this summary omits key realities that lie behind the two institutions. It tells us of the history of marriage and family but not the thing to which these institutions point nor their origin. Marriage and family are not originally human institutions. They belong to God by essence (family) and by promise (marriage) from before all time.

Families have their origin in the Father. Since he is Father, we have families (Eph 3:15). And the idea of marriage existed before the world’s founding because God promised to marry divinity to humanity in Christ and by the Spirit before the world’s foundation (Eph 5).
