Episode 34: Wyatt Graham on Two-Kingdoms Teaching

March 5, 2021 by wagraham Leave a Comment

In this episode, I talk about two-kingdoms teaching as presented in the early to mid 16th century. I try to show how such a teaching can help us a sort of political theology to make sense of how we relate to governing authorities. Afterwards, two lawyers (Chad Graham and Kristopher Kinsinger) discuss the topic with me.

FAQ on How the Church Relates to the Government

February 5, 2021 by wagraham 1 Comment

Over the past year, Christians had to answer tough questions regarding their relationship to the government. Here, I want to answer some frequently asked questions (and questions that should be frequently asked) like: can the government tell the church what to do? Do we need to obey unjust governments? Can we obey Christ and the government? When do we need to say “no” and disobey an authority?

In this article, I offer patterns of thinking to answer such questions. I do so from the perspective of early reformed teaching on what the Bible says, and so I do not represent other viewpoints than the one noted.

With that caveat, here is the FAQ: [Read more…] about FAQ on How the Church Relates to the Government

Does Christian Nationalism Exist?

January 17, 2021 by wagraham 1 Comment

Commentators have dubbed Christian supporters of Donald Trump who entered into the Capitol building Christian Nationalists. The term is slippery, however. And as far as I can see, no organized, identifiable entity can be described as Christian Nationalist. That does not mean that Christians have not mixed their faith into nationalistic hopes. That does happen. So whatever else may be true, Christians have tied their religious aspirations into some sort of political entity.

Here, I want to note a few pieces of evidence for my assertion before turning to some of the possible ways to understand the phenomenon. [Read more…] about Does Christian Nationalism Exist?

A Taxonomy for Civil Obedience And Disobedience

December 18, 2020 by wagraham 3 Comments

When it comes to the question of when we should or should not obey civil authorities, our default must be obedience (Rom 13:1). That said, we live in a complex world in which we also must not do evil. To make sense of this complexity, I propose that we use these four distinctions to guide our moral reasoning for when we should follow the default of obedience and when we might need to disobey an evil requirement.

  1. Obeying civil authorities is good.
  2. Civil authorities can require good, or neutral actions. We should obey.
  3. Civil authorities can themselves do evil structurally, which we should lobby against.
  4. Civil authorities can require us to do evil, which we should resist.

How Should Christians Think about Unjust Governments?

April 17, 2018 by wagraham 5 Comments

God appoints governmental leaders to do good (Rom 13). And the Bible instructs Christians to pray and obey their leaders. Yet a tension exists between God’s appointment of governing leaders to good and what they actually do. Some leaders simply do wrong and are unjust.

So how do Christians manage this tension? The biblical answer is that Christians follow a middle way as the salt of the earth and as those who pray for rulers to protect these rulers from the devil’s monsters. [Read more…] about How Should Christians Think about Unjust Governments?
