Does Hebrews 10:24-25 Command the Whole Church to Gather on Sunday?

Hebrews exhorts the letter’s recipients to not neglect meeting together “as is the habit of some” (Heb 10:25). Many apply this verse to churches such that it becomes a command to meet together as the whole church on Sunday mornings.

Everyone agrees that this passage exhorts the audience of Hebrews to not neglect (or forsake) meeting as some others had done. The question I am asking is: does it command the church universal to meet on Sunday morning as a whole gathered body? And if it does, then would that command be at odds with submitting to governmental mandates that temporarily restrict or prevent regular Sunday morning worship?

Here are my thoughts. [Read more…] about Does Hebrews 10:24-25 Command the Whole Church to Gather on Sunday?

Hebrews 3:1–6 Is Surprisingly Hard to Understand

Hebrews 3:1–6 is one of the most difficult passages that I have studied. Having worked to understand the passage (at least partially), I would love to share what I learned. Normally, online writing does not lend itself to the commentary genre.

The second chapter of Hebrews aims to prove that Jesus shared in humanity, so that he could be a forerunner of glory and honour, leading those behind him into the same (2:5–18). But sometimes we see Jesus as the perfect God so different from us, that we never consciously assume that he could have experienced temptation and suffering as we do.

Yet Hebrews 2 argues just the opposite: “Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted” (2:17–18). [Read more…] about Jesus Shares Your Struggles
